Bioinformatics - A quick description

I am currently pursuing my postgraduation in Medical Bioinformatics.  A lot of people ask me about what I do and what this is about.  So in this blog, I am gonna give you a short description of what exactly is bioinformatics and what are the fascinating possibilities out there!

Firstly, what is bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics is a field where we study and analyze the genes, proteins, and macromolecules of various organisms in the form of several databases.

Secondly, how exactly do we study them?

We study these by using various computational tools, algorithms, and software.

Okay, so what is the purpose?

The main purpose of studying these genes and proteins is to exactly know their structure, functionality, and abnormalities if any.  These further helps to design drugs for the disease, develop vaccines, bio-weapons, etc.

Anything interesting?

Talking about the practical applications we know the future is computers.  So, when it is both biology and computer then the applications are ocean-like.

We can sequence all the genes present in the body of an individual by identifying the genes causing the unique traits and can edit, remove, replace them. 

Yes! "Designer humans"!!

We can actually design a person with all the features of interest.  This can be done for any organism.

We can create personalized medicine for each individual based on their unique genes.

We can remove the disease-causing ability of a virus, bacteria, or any microorganism thus creating a disease-free world.

So yea! This is a simplified essence of what I am working on and what I will be doing after my studies.
